'Surfacing'
Recent works by Nick Baxter
June 9 – July 8, 2007
Opening Reception June 9, 5-9 pm

The fine art gallery space at Off The Map Tattoo Studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts, will present an exhibition of paintings and photographs by Nick Baxter entitled ‘Surfacing.’ The exhibition, which is Nick’s first ever solo showing, will open on June 9 and continue through July 8, 2007, and will feature 20 all new, thematically interwoven works.  The opening reception from 5 – 9 pm on June 9 will coincide with the ongoing Art Walk Easthampton event, which takes place on the second Saturday of every month.

A multi-faceted fine artist and well-known tattooer working in southern Connecticut for several years now, this is Nick Baxter’s first opportunity to bring his artistic vision to the masses in the scope and form of a one-man show.  This exhibition will feature ten interlocking and interrelated photorealistic oil paintings of fleshy, grotesque, layered macro-scapes.  These will be juxtaposed with ten large-scale photographs of similar subject matter, with the goal of blurring the distinctions between the two mediums in order to further enhance the somewhat surreal, conceptualized content of the works.  This approach will help immerse the viewer even more into Nick’s ongoing artistic theme of wavering logical and emotional certainties, warped realities and disorienting paradoxes, which he uses as a means of portraying the phenomena of violence, alienation, fear, and the denial of death in our crumbling and chaotic (post)modern society. This dark outlook is not all that Nick aims to offer, however, as the works in this show will include symbols of emerging beauty and ragged hope to help illustrate the positive intentions of the theme ‘Surfacing.’  To further this positive message and help provide answers to the often shocking and grim questions that his artwork aims to evoke, Nick will be giving away a myriad of completely free literature in the form of pamphlets, ‘zines, and even books.  This material will deal with the social and political themes underlying Nick’s artwork from a primarily anarchist perspective, but all are invited to come view the artwork and read about some possible solutions to the problems facing our lives and our world.

This event includes a light reception.

I was sleeping, and being comforted
by a cool breeze, when suddenly a gray dove
from a thicket sang and sobbed with longing,
and reminded me of my own passion.

I had been away from my own soul so long,
So late-sleeping, but that dove’s crying
Woke me and made me cry.

Jelaludin Rumi
(Persian Poet of the 13th century)

Many argue over wine as to what good art is. Many talk of loves lost and things anew. Some worry about what will sell or show, glitter or profit. As Everyday life carries on, and children grow; we carry within us what it is to be human. Passion and intensity lights the fire of life, while sensuality and serenity cools it. These works come from within because it is my only source. They give volume to things I cannot say and color to an emotional landscape….

But most guys like it because it looks cool.

Flux: This group show is about movement; the passage of life, time and space through the wheels of becoming. We invite you to look closely at the work, not for meaning, but rather to allow each piece to serve as a meditation tool or a conduit for your own thoughts. It is our hope that, to the viewer, these pieces will become personal, wordless narratives.

Pictured here is "Puzzle Canyon" by Virginia Harlow. This is a group exhibit of The Consortium’s 2007 Career Initiatives Artists. The Consortium, a center for responsible innovation, creates conditions to enhance the lives and make possible the dreams of people living with disabilities and/or living with the impact of abuse.

Breathing Spaces: Expressionist Photographs by Amanda Petrovato

Having worked in various media over the years, I am excited presently about the simplicity and quickness of digital photography because there is so much room for experimentation without the worry of any waste of consumables such as film, paper and chemicals. Easthampton's old mill buildings, mountain and water features seem to exhale a certain stoic gravity which I can almost taste on certain wet, dim spring afternoons. These photographs represent the preservation of my emotional response to the energies of these quietly dramatic spaces.

Bellici started drawing at soon as she could hold a pencil. As a child she spent hours studying her grandfather’s work and absorbing the anatomy of the human body.

In high school she expanded her creativity to include graphic design. She was hired by local companies to create company logos.

Bellici studied art at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst under the guidance and tutelage of American painter, Richard Yarde. She has also studied the at the Lorenzo de Medici School of Art in Florence, Italy where her 45-piece series, Vero Inizio, & Radical Feminist Nudes was born. She has exhibited her work from New York to Italy.

Bellici was diagnosed with RSD, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. She now has full-blown RSD in her entire body but continues to create.

“It is my path that I live with the pain of rsd, and it is my responsibility to raise an awareness of invisible illness’ through my talents as an artist”.

Bellici makes her home in Northampton, Massachusetts. In October of 2004 she married her partner, Kathy LeMay, one of the greatest women speakers our time.

I won't do the third person statement this time. Most people know that the artist is the one that usually writes these things anyway.
I went to art school in Connecticut. Paier College of Art, in Hamden. Nice place.

Locally, I've done work for the Advocate and have work in a number of private collections and was recently shown by a gallery in Easthampton that no longer exists and have shown in other local galleries as well as galleries in Ct. I also like writing run on sentences.

Lets see, what else....
I like toast. Probably more than most people.
I hope you like my work. I sure do.
Thanks for reading this. It makes my ego grow.

Love,
Rick

My work is influenced by the historical advertising in traveling circuses and sideshows. Using modern pop cultural references and imaginary scenarios, I play with text and imagery in a painterly way, finding double entendres and curiosities in the language of signage. These paintings are a balancing act of heartfelt sincerity and tongue in cheekiness.

It is important that my landscapes in oils and watercolors convey a sense of place. Nature is my influence but then it becomes something more. I don't want my work to capture the exactness of nature or my brush marks to be predictable. I have been told for years that I have an unnatural landscape palette. Color is important to me, but I also am intrigued by the absence of color as in my nocturnal moonscapes. I want to embrace a mood for the piece, and challenge the viewer to look deeper. In the process of painting on location or in my studio I strive for the balance of when to intervene and when to leave well enough alone.
