Artist: Andrea Lawrence |
Medium: Photography - Color |
|
Venue:
Blue Guitar Gallery |
Address: 186 Northampton St |
Event: Light, movement, a quiet mind...... Photographer Andrea Lawrence gives us a menagerie of images manifesting from seeing the world directly without filters. This series of photographs are taken in the Miksang or 'Good Eye' in Tibetan, tradition developed by Michael Wood under the guidance of the Vadyadhara Chogyam Trungpa. The photos reveal an actual commitment of pushing the shutter in a moment of seeing which stops the mind. The images capture a freshness freed from the rules and mental constructs of composition, analyzed schema even from reference points themselves leaving only the direct perceptions of a mind unattached, clear, uncomplicated and joyous.

Medium: Photography - Color |
|
Venue:
Blue Guitar Gallery |
Address: 186 Northampton St |
Event: 'Various cultures around the world have consistently honored trees as the source of life, order, knowledge, and healing; they are often depicted as an portal into a spiritual realm. My work portrays trees in a reverent and even allegorical style, to emphasize the fact that these beings are part of a spiritual awareness, a physical connection to an ancient and divine energy. Through the use of light, shadow, color, and form, my work reflects an entry into this realm. I have used a Hobo 8x10 camera to create most of the images on display. My use of a box camera (literally a wooden box) with a fixed lens and shallow depth of field along with Fuji color paper as a negative produces a ghostly, impressionistic quality with subtle, yet rich, colors. A pinhole camera, with its honest and organic approach to image making, is my other choice of camera.' JM |

Artist: Ali Potasky |
Medium: Painting |
|
Venue:
Mt.Tom's Homemade Ice Cream |
Address: 34 Cottage St |
Event: My name is Ali Potasky, and I am currently a Junior at The Williston Northampton School. I have been obsessed with horses as long as I can remember. As soon as I started riding and drawing horses in preschool, I was hooked.
As a student at Williston, I have had the opportunity to take drawing, design, painting, and photography classes. I aspire to capture the mood, expression and personality of the equine athlete, not just the physical form. The extended trot and half pass are very exciting visually, but some of my more compositionally simple pieces are my most intimate. I also love producing expressive horse portraits in any medium.

Event: The name of the film series is 'See Our Future: Energy Issues Film
Series'
AutoMania 2000 (1963) (16mm) (9 min.)
An animated, dark satire of America's automobile-obsessed, consumerist culture. An anonymous, brilliant scientist toils tirelessly in his ivory tower satisfying the public's ever-increasing demands for novelty and status consciousness, with predictable environmental consequences.
The City Cars or People (1963) (16mm) (28 min)
Another 1963 film that explores the impact of cars on modern life, more relevant today than when it was originally made. Lewis Mumford's is one of the clearest voices on urban planning. The film makers endorse his points beautifully - alternative transport shown with the great Bert Hanstraa aerial shot of the canal that goes OVER a road or the chilling ending, with cars coming off the assembly line every few seconds.

Medium: Painting - Mixed Mediums |
|
Venue:
Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters |
Address: 47 Union St |
Event: My work is influenced by the historical advertising in traveling circuses and sideshows. Using modern pop cultural references and imaginary scenarios, I play with text and imagery in a painterly way, finding double entendres and curiosities in the language of signage. These paintings are a balancing act of heartfelt sincerity and tongue in cheekiness.
