'Untold Stories & Native Voices'
Works by Peter McLean, Nayana Glazier, Courtney M Leonard & Dan Loudfoot.
April 1 - 30, 2008

Nashawannuck Gallery, which draws its name from our country's indigenous people, means 'valley of the little river.' The gallery will give voice to the untold stories of our native people.

Dan Loudfoot (Pequot tribe) documents in photographs a performance meant to evoke his sense of being set adrift from his roots. His photographs show him with the words, 'I lost my language, I lost my tribe,' taped across his mouth as he stands at a phone booth on the streets of New York City. Dan will also install an audience-participation piece so that gallery visitors can pretend to be American Natives.

One thing I miss during the winter months is color. A hearty old New England winter, such as this has been, gives us plenty of rain, snow, ice, and cold, but still thinks nothing of taking away most of the colors of the spectrum. If you'd forgotten what natural colors look like, are equally as ready for this winter to go on its monochrome way, or would just like to take a few minutes to see the flowers, I've got just the collection of colorful images for you, fresh cropped from this year's Smith College Bulb Show.

In Conjunction with the 'Untold Stories and Native Voices,' Putumayo Music has contributed door prizes of its international music collection.

Featured music at this event will be Putumayo's 'Native American Odyssey.' Most of the music on this collection reflects the way in which indigenous peoples incorporate the music around them from the predominant culture and, by blending in elements of their tradition, make it their own. The main goal of this compilation, as with all Putumayo World Music recordings, is to present a selection of great music which will hopefully entertain, surprise, and inspire you to explore even further.

Event:
Matt Johnson will exhibit several of his forged steel sculptures during this month's Art Walk. Coinciding with Denis Luzuriaga's exhibit, so there is a lot going on at the Old Town Hall this month!

Here's Matt's statement: For me, the artmaking process is as much an endeavor of the body as it is one of the mind. Issue and imagery fade behind the event of the art coming-into-being. Manual manipulation at the threshold of achievability is the desirable working condition. No assistants, no excuses, no complaining...just real work accomplishing real tasks. All this eventually leading to a visual entity from which there might be gleaned some elevated perception or momentary amusement.

Fiber art with a twist as the Garden of Eden is recreated out of fiber art such as quilting, knitting and crouching. Trees grow out of trunks and branches knit in purl and leaves of splendor out of vintage sari materials. use of quilting and knitting in nontraditional ways is exciting and refreshing, in a world full of computer generated art and communication. The forms in this show are organic and hearkens back to the true Americana.

Nashawannuck Gallery, which draws its name from our country's indigenous people, means "valley of the little river." The gallery will give voice to the untold stories of our native people.

Peter McLean, the only non-Native American in this exhibit, has given voice to their cause by illustrating in large-scale charcoal drawings the lost tales and crimes against indigenous people. He was amazed how the 1637 Pequot massacre in Mystic, CT, where 300 - 400 inhabitants, mostly elders and children, was never mentioned in our early educational American History books.

Nashawannuck Gallery brings Peter's masterful drawings from his recent exhibition at Trinity College together with Dan, Courtney and Nayana artwork from their Native American exhibition at Brown University to for this insightful exhibit about Native American issues.

Once upon a time he was famous as the funny bone of EHS's class of '79. Then A.J. Wiernasz scoured the planet as a Hindu monk in search of India's mystical... Meaning of Life. Now for the first time, his findings are revealed. The Dream Catcher (aka 'orbitron' or 'gyro') was designed by NASA engineers to train astronauts for work in zero gravity. 'The Dream Catcher, like life itself, is a Quantum Mathematical problem you solve with your body and mind', Wiernasz says. Come and experience the inner bliss that Himalayan mystics have pursued for lifetimes at Eastwork's Saturday April 12 (weather permitting). There will be no charge for Dream Catcher rides but donations or tips will allow Mr. Wiernasz to purchase bread and water.
